How to pack a bicycle
Whether you’re taking a bike along on holiday or sending it to a friend or relative, the first order of business is getting the right box. This can be tricky, as the only suitable box for shipping a bike is an actual bicycle box from a manufacturer. If you just bought the bike and it hasn’t been put together yet, just send it along in its original packaging.
If the bike is used or has already been assembled, your best bet is to take it to a reputable bicycle shop and pay them to break it down and pack it for you. Then you can be certain it has been done properly and all the necessary precautions have been taken.
Packing the bike yourself is a risk, as there are numerous components that can easily be damaged in transit if they are not sufficiently protected. Note: courier services will not ship a bicycle that hasn’t been boxed.
Keep in mind that the bike will have to be reassembled after it reaches its destination.
Selecting a bike courier
Once you have the bicycle packed, the rest is easy. Measure the length, width, and height of the box, and place it on a scale to determine its weight. Then enter the numbers into our quote form and we’ll present you with a list of courier services to pick from.
Needless to say, the box is going to be bigger and bulkier than your average parcel. So be prepared to pay a higher shipping cost. If you’d like, Fast Courier can arrange for the driver to collect the package from your home, saving you the trouble of lugging around a large cumbersome box.
