- Republican Allen West, who during the campaign threatened to take U.S. Rep. Ron Klein behind the woodshed, decisively ousted the incumbent amid national discontent with the Democratic Party.
Republicans had targeted the closely split 22nd Congressional District in Broward/Palm Beach as one of 39 they needed to regain the majority in the House of Representatives — a feat they appeared on track to accomplish Tuesday night.
“This shows the triumph of the American people,” West told his celebrating audience at a Boca Raton hotel after 11 p.m. as he declared victory.
At that time he was comfortably ahead of Klein in both counties. All the district’s Broward precincts had been counted, and more than a third of the precincts had been posted for Palm Beach.
