Mental wellness is a form of health care that has not been well utilized within our community. The stigma of seeking mental health care is still a major factor. It seems when we need this type of health service it is perceived as being a service that people outside of our culture utilize-not us.

The myth of Black women being stronger than life is one that we have to break. It is one that does more damage than it does good. I stopped buying into that belief decades ago because I sincerely believe that it is a potential emotional landmine just waitin to explode. That myth often fails to teach us what to do when we are not successful or operating on emotional overload.

A lot of us also rely on our faith to see us through difficult times. Many of our long standing institutions do not promote seeking outside help for problems.
