Torii Hunter issues apology for referring to Latino players as ‘imposters’

Los Angeles Angels center fielder Torii Hunter insists he meant no harm toward Latino players when he referred to them as “impostors” while discussing the number of African-Americans in the major leagues.

Hunter’s original comments were made two weeks ago in one of a series of USA Today roundtables about baseball and published in yesterday’s editions.

“What troubles me most was the word “impostors” appearing in reference to Latin American players not being black players. It was the wrong word choice, and it definitely doesn’t accurately reflect how I feel and who I am,” Hunter posted on his Angels-sponsored blog yesterday afternoon.

If Hunt meant that Black Latinos are not African-Americans, then he is correct insofar as they are not members of that ethnic group formerly referred to as “American Negroes.” That is, after all, who African-Americans are. Further, most Afro-Latinos do not self-identify as African-Americans, but as Latinos. In fact, unfortunately, far too many are in full flight from their African roots. God! Look at that self-loathing fool Sammy Sosa with his “rejuvenated” (yeah, right), bleached skin (carcinogenic!) and White wife. Sammy can run, but he can't hide. That Dominicans and other Afro-Latinos are Black, however, is obvious.
