AMEN TO THE BELOW EMAIL! I do not want to hear about what others are doing, getting and giving; I want to know what we do for ourselves. The comparisons and excuses in 2009 are old and rhetorical. What the article does not separate out - is the single parent household base on out of wedlock births, separated/divorced parents but both are involved in the child's life, and those births with no father involvement. There are some huge variables that can equal to an increase in dangerous environment and situations that lead to anti-social behaviors. We do have control over our bodies and what we chose for ourselves. Stop the victimizations and start the empowerment (wherever possible).

At some point we have to be accountable for our actions and take some ownership over our future. A portion (how much can be debated through eternity) of our communities issues/opportunities are our own fault. Does the conversation become more productive when we have discussions focused on our controllables versus the uncontrollables? I think it does. I would challenge all of our bright minds to engage in that conversation with the hope that it will be fruitful in creating outcomes we can act on and build "us" up one at a time. I don't want to hear another statistic comparing us to them. How they do is irrelevant? I say this because we have to set our own expectations for our community. Those expectations need to independent of how other races are doing. If less than 100% of our children are graduating from high school then we have an issue. If any of our black men or women are going to jail then we have an issue. If any of our children are living in poverty then we have an issue. It is an issue because we want our people to be their best and do their best day in and out regardless of what is going on in other races. We have to change our expectations and the foundation we use for measurement. This will move us in the direction we want to go.
