Today, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), former chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, released the following statement in response to the CBC’s unanimous decision to support the swearing-in of Roland Burris to the United States Senate :
“The question of whether or not to seat Senator-designate Roland Burris is, at its root, not a question of color, but a question of fairness, equality, and constitutional rights. Since its creation, the Congressional Black Caucus has been committed to ensuring that these qualities are exercised by our nation’s legislative branch. I am very proud to have joined my CBC colleagues today in the unanimous decision to support the immediate swearing-in of Roland Burris, and I look forward to working with Mr. Burris as we move our nation back on the right track.”
