Dozens of clergy members have gathered in Chicago to show their support for Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s controversial Senate appointee Roland Burris as he readies to leave for Washington.
About 60 ministers met at a church on Sunday evening, called together by Democratic Rep. Bobby Rush. At a news conference, Rush condemned Senate Democratic leaders for rejecting Burris.
Rush called the U.S. Senate “the last bastion of plantation politics.”
Blagojevich appointed Burris to President-elect Barack Obama’s vacant U.S. Senate seat last week. Senate Democrats have said they would not accept anyone appointed by Blagojevich, who faces federal accusations he tried to sell the seat.
Blagojevich says he has done nothing wrong.
