Everyone ivolved in this mess should be ashamed. It starts with Darth Blago but extends through Roland "I'll take it anyway I can get it" Burris, and all of the "supporters who have come out of the woodwork. You all played right into blago's hand and did an incredible disservice to the people of Illinois, African Americans, and Americans in general.

The blatant opportunism of Burris is no less disgusting than Blago's corruption. And now the activists pile on to declare that anyone who doesn't seat Burris is a racist. THoroughly ridiculous. yes it would be ideal of Obama was replaced by an African American, but it is NOT a requirement or a right. We as a natoin are on the edge of collapse and need competent, principled, and self-less leadership. Roland Burris fails on at least two of those requirements.

Hello!

I am outraged by the behavior of the Illinois governor. But that is all it is -- outrageous behavior. We do not yet know if he committed any actual crime (making him the subject of a real impeachment movement) and he has not yet been found guilty in a court of law. As an American who respects our Constitution, I have to agree that the Governor of Illinois has the right to fulfill his legal obligations, including the appointment of a U.S. Senator to fill a vacancy.

By the same token, I am disappointed that Mr. Burriss would accept an offer as tainted as the one extended by Blagojevich. But Burriss appears to be as qualified as any other Illinois elected official and has yet to be linked to any wrongdoing of any kind.

So even if he were not Black, there is no compelling legal or ethical reason to keep Burriss from his duly appointed position as a United States Senator.

The people of Illinois deserve two votes in the U.S. Senate. Illinois is a big state and big decisions will be made during the next two months. Gov. Blagojevich is right to move forward with an appointment -- though he might have handled it better -- and, though cynically manipulative, it is admirable that an American of African descent has been selected.

The Democratic Party will only hurt itself if it continues to speak about barring the Burriss seating.
