Johnson Publishing Company, Inc. (JPC) today announces its partnership with Google™ to transpose the archives of its most famous publications into searchable, digital formats via the Google Book Search utility.
Google Book Search will allow users to see selected archives of premiere magazines including Ebony and Jet as well as Black World and Ebony Jr. magazines in their original color context. The archive will be searchable by cover and content at books.google.com.
The publications of JPC are the first and only African-American magazines participating in the initial launch of Google’s efforts to digitize magazines.
The first magazines available for view in the project are the post-1960 issues of Ebony, Jet and Black World and all issues of the children’s magazine Ebony Jr. The company’s first publication, Negro Digest (which became Black World), Ebony from 1945-59, Jet from 1953-1959, will be available in the coming months.
Eric Easter, JPC’s chief of digital strategy said, “From politics to fashion to celebrity, the archives of Ebony, Jet, Black World and Ebony Jr. provide extraordinary context for where this country has been and how far it’s come. It’s an exciting archive, and we’re happy to bring it to a new global audience with Google.”
