Black voters key factor in race for Broward County sheriff

- The race for Broward sheriff could be decided, in part, in the pews of the county’s black churches, the streets of its African-American neighborhoods and the airwaves of its Caribbean radio stations.

With black voters expected to turn out in force in November to support Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, sheriff hopefuls Al Lamberti and Scott Israel face an opportunity and a challenge: Convincing this potentially undecided voting bloc to put them in office.

Israel, the Democratic challenger, boasts key endorsements and has the edge on the surface in a county with a 2-1 advantage of Democratic voters. But Israel did not make great inroads in black voting precincts in the primary, offering a potential opening to Republican incumbent Lamberti.
