- Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will be allowed to travel to Denver to take part in the Democratic National Convention.
Kilpatrick and his former top aide were arraigned today in Wayne County, Michigan, Circuit Court on perjury and other charges stemming from a text-messaging sex scandal. Not-guilty pleas were entered on their behalf.
The judge cleared Kilpatrick to travel to Denver to take part in the convention, where he’s a superdelegate, over the objections of prosecutors. He said barring Kilpatrick from the gathering is “silly.”
The judge also ruled that Kilpatrick no longer has to wear an electronic tether that had been ordered as part of his bond in the perjury case.
But the Michigan attorney general’s office says the mayor still may be required to wear the tether since it was also part of his bond in a separate assault case.
Prosecutors are expected to file an appeal.
