Obama New Yorker cover – satire or tasteless & offensive?

Statement from Obama campaign:

“The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama’s right wing critics have tried to create. But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree,” spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement.

This is getting out of control. I am hoping this is an early April Fool’s joke. But you know, the people who control the media are ignorant enough to believe this will be seen as satire.

WTF…..this is really getting out of control and everyone is jumping on the bandwagon with this stuff! Folks will do whatever they can to tarnish anothers rep. The Obama’s will forever be in the light, especially now that it looks like he will be our next and First African American President. This is very offensive to ALL Americans!!

This cover is very ugly and racist. If this is meant to be a satire, they missed the boat. This only feeds the untrue rumors of the Obama’s. The publishers if the New Yorker magazine should issue an apology and explain their thinking (if the process was used). Today, there are more important news worthy things to report on rather than conduct character assination on those who might become our nation’s next first family. Shame on you New Yorker magazine, maybe you should be acquired by a foreign interest.

I think this is pure racist propaganda, however America was and is a country founded on the near-genocide of the Native American People before there was a Hilter and the “Holocaust of Enslavement on African People” (Maulana Karenga).

Not only that — it demonizes Islam! Most KKK member were ’so-called’ Chirstians who praised the Lord on Sunday morning and then lynched a black man or three that afternoon. ?Should we characterize all Christians as KKK-terrorist?

Pick up the book: Without Sanctuary the documentary book on American Terrorism of Black People by lynching.

America is suppose to be about religious freedom. So what if Barack Obama is a Muslim (& he confesses isn’t), he is first an American that believes in the Constitution of the United States and the Declaration of Independence! — E. Pluribus Unum ( Out of Many, One)

Unforetuately the support reflected in the accompanying article will be overshadowed by the foolishness of the cover. Quite honestly, I was more offended by the “Afro Romance” ad for “interracial dating only” posted by BPW…..Come on y’all.

  • cia

Pure racism in rare form–everyone with any common decency should be offended!

As a former female African American federal officer in the South, I find this article not only offensive as it pertains to Obama; I find it offensive to African American women. Too often we are seen to be the ABW (Angry Black Woman). For nine years, I carried a 9 mm on my hip with a badge, protecting the community in which I worked and lived. If at any time, I verbalized my discontent or disagreement (always in a politically correct and professional manner) with any matter (especially while on duty and strapped) I was immediately portrayed by my superiors (all Caucasion) as an angry, militant, black woman who needed to be feared and watched. Viewing this picture, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to determine who is Editor in Chief at the New Yorker! I am saving this article for my growing collection of “Wall of Shame” Memoirs!

Obviously The New Yorker magazine cover is horrendous. And the issue needs to be pulled from the newsstands. But what else is new?

Our people have to understand that the African American people have been under a seige of “declarative propaganda” since the beginning of the Slave Trade. We have to remember that for hundreds of years, our very essence — body, mind and ultimately soul — was a commodity to be used for corporate and personal gain. We keep wanting to believe that superior education and upbringing will alter our essence in the hearts of American masses and there simply is no evidence yet to prove that theory.

What is quite dramatically new, in terms of the assault against the Obamas, is that simply reminding Caucasian Americans that the Obamas are “black” is not going to be enough. Everybody knows that the Obamas are black. That there needs to be a concerted effort to vilify them and confirm that they are the wrong kind of black is really what is at work here. The truly horrifying element in the photo isn’t even really being discussed and that is the portrait on Osama Bin Ladin over the fireplace. There are any number of Americans who don’t like the American flag. And the incessant lie that Obama is Islamic can only wash to the degree that Americans feel all followers of the Islamic faith are enemy combatants. And those of you defending the Islamic faith also need to be mindful that the Nation of Islam has been carrying the torch of Islam for almost 100 years in America and hasn’t received its just due as a legitimate branch of the faith. Islam inside a black skin has always been suspect in America, not just since 9/11.

But putting Osama Bin Ladin on the wall is particularly diabolical because he is still the most wanted man on the planet by the United States National Security Administration. In fact, he is to be killed on sight. Satire, however “edgy” its intent, is never suppose to cross the line to “murder.” Bin Laden is not satire. Bin Laden represents murder. People all over this planet are being snatched off the streets and taken to hidden prisons, tortured and abused and many probably killed just on the “hunch” that they might be connected to Osama Bin Laden. To put that picture in the “satire” cover is not satire. That is assassination projection. This cover is a license to kill.

There are more than 5 million members of the Islamic faith in the United States. In fact, Muslims are very close, if not already , set to surpass the number of Jewish Americans. The continued projection as Muslims as fifth column terrorists is going to have astonishing consequences to the American social order. With the degree of racism and anti-Islamic baiting going on regarding Barack Obama (and with The New Yorker cover, now even Michelle Obama is being painted with the Islamic terrorist brush, another new development in the smear campaign) do you have any idea what is going to happen in America if somebody kills Barack Obama?

This is swiftly moving way beyond just eliminating one black man. The truly racist forces that would love to precipitate a national racial conflagation are wetting their lips and praying people keep stirring the pot. Nobody in America was ready for what happened after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. And nobody is going to be ready for what’s coming if Barack Obama is assassinated. 50 millon black Americans are really going to have to look in the mirror and ask what kind future is in store for our people. And 5 to 10 million Muslims in America are going to have to assume it was more because Obama was considered a Muslim than simply because he was black. And Al Quaida and Bin Laden and every enemy in the Islamic world of the United States will simply say, “You see, we told you.”

So, New Yorker, there is nothing satirical about your cover story. No matter what you have in the copy to prove your support for the Obamas, a picture, in this day and age of Cyberspace and nano-second attention spans, still says a 1,000 words. And you knew that when you published this issue. Go wash your hands, there’s blood on them.

Tasteless–they over reached and ended up with a bomb that is not only offensive, but stupid. The New Yorker is usually cutting edge in its satire but ends up being nothing but cuting–satire to be effective has to be recognized by more than one or two people–Don B
