Prosecutor estimates costs in Detroit mayor case

- The criminal case against Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former top aide is expected to cost $200,000 this year to prosecute and could cost an additional $1 million next fiscal year.

The Detroit Free Press reports Saturday that Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy recently gave the estimate to county commissioners. Worthy says the $1 million figure was a projection for the 2008-09 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.

The mayor and former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty are charged with perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice stemming from testimony they gave last year during a police whistle-blowers’ trial.

That case led to an $8.4 million settlement by the city.

Kilpatrick and Beatty deny the charges, and face a Sept. 22 preliminary hearing.
