- After the Indiana and North Carolina presidential primaries last week I posted an item on our online forum “Exploring Race,” (at chicagotribune.com/race) asking readers to analyze what Barack Obama’s close second-place finish in Indiana, a very conservative state, tells us about race.
A lot of readers said Obama’s candidacy in general has conveyed less about white voters than it has about black voters because African-Americans consistently have come out in droves to support him.
The thinking continues to be that the “black vote” has gone to Obama solely (or essentially) because of his race. Frankly, that’s insulting. Unfortunately it’s an insult that’s perpetuated by the media.
