Who’s behind prison walls affects us all

With an important primary election coming up in Wisconsin, no doubt the candidates are thinking about a campaign theme that best reflects the nature of our state.

“America’s Dairyland” always works. Mentioning the Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre is always a winner. Politically speaking, some people still think of Wisconsin as a progressive kind of place, although that’s not a universal belief.

My choice? It has to be our latest ranking – once again – as one of the “Ten Worst Places to Be Black in America” in 2008.

    The prison stats are especially telling because it may reveal one of the state’s secret shams;
    If Wisconsin has a large number of prisons in small towns rather than a few, it might explain the arrest rates in that those towns are dependent on the prisons.
    No prisoners, no prisons, no jobs. Simple as that.
    Hardly a conspiracy theory but it might explain why there’s been little change since the last survey.
